Adjustment of Status FAQs

Can I travel while my I-485 is pending?

You should not travel without approved Advance Parole (Form I-131). File for Advance Parole concurrently with your I-485 to obtain travel authority. With valid Advance Parole, you can travel and re-enter the U.S. without abandoning your application.

When can I start working after filing I-485?

File for work authorization (Form I-765) concurrently with your I-485. Once approved, you can work for any employer in the United States. Processing typically takes 2-6 months for EAD approval.

What if I have a biometrics appointment conflict?

Contact USCIS as soon as possible to reschedule. Missing your appointment without rescheduling could result in denial of your I-485. Most service centers allow online rescheduling through your USCIS account.

What documents do I need for my medical exam?

You must see a USCIS-designated civil surgeon. Bring your I-693 form, passport, and insurance information. The exam typically costs $100-300. Results must be included with your I-485 application.
